The Matariki festival marks an important time on the Maori calendar, the Maori New Year. This festival has something for everyone, entertainment, workshops, arts & crafts and much more. June to July is a special time of year and Matariki gives us the opportunity to celebrate Aotearoa's Pacific New Year.

Auckland's Matariki Festival June - July Auckland Wide   Matariki Celebrations

Heralded by the rising of the star constellation known as Matariki, the Maori New Year is a time for sharing kai, rituals, entertainment, hospitality and knowledge. The Matariki Festival is packed full of great events & activities across the Auckland region giving people of all cultures the chance to come together and celebrate this special time of year, unique to Aotearoa.
Auckland's Matariki Festival June - July Auckland Wide   What's On

- Acknowledge the first day of the Matariki Festival by attending the dawn karakia. From the top of Maungakiekie, look beyond the horizon and welcome the Matariki star cluster.
- Enjoy breakfast and a 45 minute planetarium show, Matariki Dawn at the Stardome observatory & planetarium.
- Take the opportunity to enjoy a short film with whanau and friends by attending "Movies at the Marae"
- Come along and watch one of the many Kapa Haka performances & competitions
- Visit one of the many libraries holding Matariki storytime and listen to Maori legends, songs and proverbs about this magical time of the year.
Auckland's Matariki Festival June - July Auckland Wide   Cultural Workshops

- Attend one of the many Maori cultural workshops. Start the day with a Powhiri & korero and then learn the art of flax weaving, poi making, hand games & Maori story telling.
- Te Reo Maori language & Waiata sessions will be held to help learn basic conversational Maori language.
- Learn how to prepare a traditional maori feast.
- Celebrate by learning the art of flying a kite, a highly symbolic connection to Matariki with kites seen as the connectors between the heavens & earth.
