New Zealand's Premier Fleet Yacht Race
The race begins at Devonport Wharf in Auckland on the Friday of Labour weekend. Getting a clear start is crucial to sailing in a good position out of the Hauraki Gulf and the startline provides intense boating action.
For those watching the race from ashore, prime vantage spots are Devonport Wharf and Bastion Point, then North Head as they round and progress on the first leg of the journey.
The race can take as little as seven or eight hours for the fastest boats, or as long as two days for the slowest boats in light conditions. The race is 119 nautical miles and finishes at Russell Wharf in the Bay of Islands. |
