The Museum Tour lasts 30 minutes and gives a brief insight into the lives of service men and women who have served our nation with pride. Or take a tour of the Naval Base itself - HMNZS Philomel - including the Memorial Wall, Calliope Dry Dock, St Christopher's Chapel and the HMNZS Achilles gun turret.

Take an informative walking tour along Devonport's waterfront; discover interesting historic facts of the relationship between Devonport and the Navy. After the tour, climb Mt Victoria or North Head and discover the historic defence installations and take in the vista of the harbour and Auckland city from a new perspective.

We hold a unique collection of objects ranging from functional to ceremonial that represent a full range of events & experiences about the Royal NZ Navy including social & personal items that illustrate the lives of our naval personnel, both at sea and ashore.

Examine the collection of historic swords, firearms, armament, ammunition and uniforms. There are photos and generic plans together with detailed drawings for the majority of RNZN ships and a number of topographic maps and charts of voyages of discovery and naval actions.

Discover the stories behind the many medals, decorations and badges awarded to naval personnel, and follow their history through the outstanding photographic images dated from as early as the late 19th century. Subject matter is broad and encompasses RNZN ships, parades and ceremonies, official class and group photographs, historical photographs, Pacific Island ship tours of the 1950s and 1960s and Antarctic exploration.

Research the history of NZ from a naval perspective - covering the 1860's NZ Wars, both World Wars and the Korean War. Gain a deeper understanding of the Navy's role in the celebrations on Waitangi Day. Learn about degaussing which was used to protect warships from magnetic mines developed in the Second World War. Immerse yourself in the work of the Navy from Captain James Cook's time up until the present day. Personal experiences can be heard through our oral displays.
